Empathy is the core foundation of design thinking and a key element in product development. It enables designers to embrace a people-centred approach — gaining insight into the real challenges users face through careful observation or firsthand experience. By truly understanding users’ feelings and behavioural tendencies, designers can accurately identify pain points and avoid theoretical or impractical solutions, ultimately creating products that genuinely meet users’ needs.

In light of this, the Age-Friendly Home Living Lab regularly partners with collaborators to host “Empathy Experiential Workshops,” inviting gerontechnology developers to step into the world of older adults. Through activities such as dressing, taking medication, making payments, reading, and writing, participants gain a deeper understanding of the physical changes and daily challenges older adults encounter as they age.
